PostEurop and its members place sustainability at the heart of our activities, fully aligned with the EU’s goals of cutting net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 and achieving climate neutrality by 2050.
As key players in the transport and logistics sector, European postal operators are committed to year-round decarbonisation efforts within their operations, contributing directly to the EU’s climate ambition through:
- Operating one of the largest low-emission fleets across Europe which includes over 109,000 electric vehicles and 14,000 vehicles powered by alternative fuels
- 77% of our electricity use comes from renewable sources
- A wide range of circular economy and waste reduction initiatives
Partnership and cooperation
On this Green Postal Day, PostEurop joins 22 postal operators worldwide, including those from Europe, to highlight the sector’s contributions to address climate change.
Back in 2008, leading postal operators launched the Environmental Measurement and Monitoring System (EMMS), followed in 2019 by the Sustainability Measurement and Management System (SMMS). Since then, participating posts have reduced their overall collective CO2 emissions by more than 31 million tonnes.
Together, they have cut their annual emissions by 40% compared to the 2008 baseline and by 17% on 2019 baseline and are committed to reach a 50% reduction by 2030.
The emissions savings made by the participating posts are equivalent to taking approximately 6.7 million average cars off the road for a year.
The Green Postal Day is a reminder of the role the sector plays in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Through PostEurop, European postal operators regularly collaborate and share expertise on sustainability. This includes contributing to the European Commission’s Clean Corporate Fleet initiative and drawing attention to sustainability aspects within the Omnibus package .
“The continuous effort and collaboration among European Postal Operators are driven by Europe’s ambition to lead in sustainability. We are proud that our members constantly innovate so that customers can benefit from more sustainable deliveries, backed by one of Europe’s largest low-emission fleets,” said Elena Fernández Rodríguez, Chairwoman of the PostEurop Board of Directors.

About the SMMS programme
The IPC Sustainability Measurement and Management System (SMMS) was launched in 2019 to address the sustainability objectives of the postal sector for the next ten years, aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Currently 31 posts from America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Oceania participate in the programme. It expands on the 2008-2019 Environmental Measurement and Monitoring System (EMMS), which focused on reducing carbon emissions, and broadens the remit to the seven sustainability focus areas most relevant for the postal sector.
