Arnold Schwarzenegger launches 100% Electric Postal Delivery in Vienna for Austrian Post

Austrian Post has switched its delivery fleet in Vienna entirely to electric vehicles and the muscle power of its delivery staff. Vienna has thus become the largest city in Europe where the last mile of postal deliveries is entirely CO₂-free.

To mark this milestone, the official launch took place today at Heldenplatz, attended by Arnold Schwarzenegger, the initiator of the Austrian World Summit climate conference which begins tomorrow, Minister for Economic Affairs Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer, Vienna’s City Councillor for Climate Action Jürgen Czernohorszky, and Austrian Post CEO Walter Oblin.

We have invested over €32 million in expanding our electric fleet and infrastructure. Today, around 1,000 vehicles are in operation in Vienna, saving around 2,300 tonnes of CO₂ annually – clear proof that climate protection and economically efficient delivery on a large scale go hand in hand.”

The new postal delivery in Vienna
In total, over 1,300 delivery staff are now out and about every day on foot, by e-bike, e-moped or electric van, serving the people of Vienna. Each year, 1,000 delivery vehicles in Vienna now cover around eight million kilometres running purely on electricity. As a result, Austrian Post saves around 2,300 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually in the capital. To facilitate this transition, Austrian Post has invested a total of 32 million euros in charging infrastructure and electric vehicles.

Austrian Post already generates a significant proportion of the electricity required for this itself: in Vienna and Hagenbrunn (Lower Austria), from where delivery routes to the capital begin and electric vehicles are charged, Austrian Post operates photovoltaic systems at three sites with a total capacity of 5.9 megawatts peak (MWp); the only electricity purchased is Austrian electricity from renewable energy sources.

Next Goal: Electric Delivery all over Austria
In an increasing number of provincial capitals and regions – such as Vienna, Graz, Salzburg and Innsbruck – postal deliveries are already being carried out entirely using electric vehicles. With over 6,000 electric vehicles, Austrian Post already operates by far the largest electric fleet in the country. Following the capital, Vienna, Austrian Post has already set its sights on the next goal: by 2030, all last-mile deliveries in Austria are to be carried out exclusively by electric vehicles or on foot.
