Green Postal Day: Postal Operators commits to ambitious 2030 Sustainability targets

Together with Postal Operators worldwide, PostEurop joins in on the third Green Postal Day this 17 September 2021, dedicated to the essential role of postal operators in the fight against climate change.

This is an occasion to underline Its commitment and show the recent actions taken by its members to protect the environment and support the EU Green deal and delivering the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) outlined in its Manifesto.

Postal operators have been pioneers in implementing sustainability policies and actions, in their operations and in meeting expectations of stakeholders regarding sustainability. They continue to lead the way to reduce carbon emission through their strong expertise in green innovative solutions, despite the challenges brought on by the long COVID-19 pandemic.

Postal Operators announce ambitious collective targets for 2030

Through the IPC SMMS Programme, participating postal operators have achieved an aggregated reduction in their yearly emissions by 34% , compared to 2008. This has led postal operators to raise their commitments to halve their yearly collective CO2 emissions  by 2030 compared to 2019 levels.  To meet this goal, postal operators will focus mainly on emissions generated by buildings and transportation, which respectively account for 45 and 55% of their total emissions. By 2030, posts collectively aim to have

  • 50% of their fleet as alternative fuel vehicles (against 22% in 2020), of which 25% of electric vehicles (against 16% in 2020) and
  • 75% of their energy consumed, generated from renewable sources (against 33% in 2020).
  • In addition, they collectively commit to have 50% of sold packaging reusable, recyclable, or compostable.

Postal Operators commitment

Postal operators understand the importance of the EU Green Deal and are ready to play a prominent role in the Green recovery, a key element of the European Union growth strategy. Therefore, PostEurop fully supports EU objective  to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 and to become climate-neutral by 2050.

More over, members of PostEurop successfully raised awareness on the need for the global sector to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at the recent 27th UPU Congress In Abidjan calling for further action.

"Sustainability management is becoming increasingly important for postal operators and customers in Europe as well as globally, in our daily lives.  Despite the various challenges we face, I am confident that postal operators can contribute to the EU Green Deal and UN COP26 discussions through our experience and expertise." states Jean-Paul Forceville, Chairman of PostEurop.
