This year's Polish EUROPA stamp depicts the famous Vistula river, the longest and largest river in Poland. For centuries, this river served as the main communication and postal route for the country.

Royal and private merchant letter carriers and horse riders had been functioning on this route since the Middle Ages, leading to the establishment of the public postal service which was founded by King Sigismund II Augustus in 1558.

Alongside with significant political and economic development of Poland in 15th and 16th centuries, during the Polish Golden Ages, the Vistula with its tributaries, and a systematically developing road network, connected royal cities situated on its banks, like Kraków, Sandomierz, Warszawa, Toruń, Elbląg, Gdańsk and other parts of the country, as well as Europe and Asia continents.
