Lithuania Post Collected a Record Amount of Money

During the first days of the euro introduction in Lithuania, Lithuania Post has collected more than LTL 120m (January 2-5).

Before the midday of January 5, the post offices collected almost LTL 45m. This was a record amount collected so far during several business hours.

“As expected, the flows of residents were rising during the first days of the euro introduction. The experience of the neighbouring countries shows that the flows of visitors become stable in the course of the first three weeks. We are asking for understanding with regard to long queues at the post offices. Customers will be able to exchange their litas into the euro free of charge until March 1. We wish to remind that the currency exchange service is rendered free of charge at commercial banks, credit unions, and the units of the Bank of Lithuania making a network of approximately 400 currency exchange points,” Directress of the Postal Network Division of Lithuania Post Inga Dundulienė said.

The currency is exchanged at 330 post offices with 628 customer service counters by approximately 1200 employees. According to Ms Dundulienė, some post offices can be short of the money by the end of the day, but the stock of the euros is replenished daily. The currency is delivered to the post offices taking into account the customer flows and safety.

To ensure fast and quality customer service, the post offices involved into the currency exchange process have opened separate counters for conventional postal services, i.e. to send or collect items, purchase postage stamps and the like.
