Austrian Post has put its 3,000th e-vehicle into operation. The latest addition to the yellow-green e-fleet is stationed in Vienna and at the same time marks the starting signal for the implementation of "Green Vienna". By 2025, Swiss Post intends to deliver completely CO 2 -free in the federal capital.

“We are tackling an ambitious project with our 3,000th e-vehicle: CO2-free delivery in Vienna by 2025. We are now starting green parcel delivery in Vienna with the first 40 e-vans. We want to switch the first district completely to CO2-free delivery as early as autumn,” explains Peter Umundum, Director of Parcel & Logistics at Österreichische Post AG.

By rolling out more electric vehicles, Austrian Post will be delivering all letters, advertising mail, print media and small parcels (delivery directly to the mailboxes) in Vienna emission-free from spring onwards. In order for this to succeed, 1,200 deliverers are on duty every day on foot, with e-bikes, e-mopeds or e-vans for the Viennese.

At the same time, Swiss Post is starting to expand the charging stations at its logistics locations in Vienna in order to successively convert all 23 districts completely to e-mobility by 2025. For this purpose, Swiss Post will exchange around 350 conventional vehicles with combustion engines for new e-vehicles. The investment volume is around 20 million euros.

Photovoltaic Power, Second Life For Car Batteries

With 3,000 e-vehicles, including around 1,200 e-bikes, e-cargo bikes, e-mopeds and e-trikes, as well as over 1,800 e-vans, Austrian Post already operates the largest e-fleet in the country. By 2030, it will be delivering all parcels, letters, print media and advertising mail throughout Austria emission-free. Since February 2022, only e-vehicles have been purchased for delivery, and around 1,000 more e-vehicles are to follow each year.

The Post already generates some of the electricity it needs itself: 13 photovoltaic systems with an output of around 4.3 megawatts peak (MWp) have been set up across Austria. A further 4.5 MWp is currently being implemented and the expansion of a further 9 MWp is already planned. Only green electricity from Austria is purchased.

Swiss Post's e-vehicles have not only proven themselves in daily use since 2011, they are also ideal for start-stop operation and are very popular with deliverers. The life cycle of an e-vehicle is already cheaper for Swiss Post than using an equivalent vehicle with a combustion engine, and they also show significantly less wear and tear and lower energy costs.

Swiss Post considers the entire life cycle of e-vehicles and their batteries, using software-supported battery monitoring including a wear forecast. With a focus on the second-life use of used vehicle batteries after upgrade, repair or recycling, they can also be used as stationary energy storage.
