The history of Icelandic postmen dates back to 1776 when King Christian VII issued a decree establishing a postal system in Iceland. The delivery of correspondence in days of old was almost heroic! The first postmen had to travel extensively on foot and horseback through rugged landscape, crossing bridgeless rivers and sometimes even glaciers to bring mail to the most remote areas of the country.

The white-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) is a bird of prey breeding in Northern Europe and Asia. The eagle became almost extinct in Europe, but preservation activities have made it possible to rebuild some nest sites. Males are smaller than female birds. The eagle reaches sexual maturity four to five years old. The eagle population in Iceland is slowly recovering and counted 76 adult couples in 2017, having more than tripled over 50 years. Most eagles nest in West Iceland. They catch birds and fish, even taking lambs and seals when the opportunity arises. The eagle was accorded full status as protected species in 1913.

In September 2013 two new bridges were opened over the Elliðaá estuary with walkways connecting them to a larger system in the metropolitan area. The bridge and walkways form a collaborative project between the city of Reykjavík and the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration. The bridges measure 4,5 m in width and 36 m in length. The height of the support structure is 18 m. These bridges represent a new era in transport with increased emphasis on diverse forms of transport.

Castles were never built in Iceland, with the 'exception' of Castles in the Air and Castles in the Snow, which are the theme of the Icelandic Europa stamps. Throughout Icelandic nature, however, castle forms can be seen. In the famous poem “Skjaldbreiður“ Jonas Hallgrímsson says: “Made of blue solidified lava / these are castles of rock for the freeborn.” This castle metaphor refers to shapes that can be seen in nature.

The Wooden Duck was first produced from 1931 to 1960 by Akureyri Toy Makers and Leifur Toys, both based in Akureyri. The production was initiated by Skarphéðinn Ásgeirsson and the toys enjoyed great domestic popularity. Leifur Toys took over the production in 1942 and continued producing wooden toys until 1960. The business failed, however, due to increased import of foreign toys.

The stoneharp: In 2001 the artist Páll Gudmundsson in Húsafell created a new musical instrument, the so-called stoneharp. The harp consists of stones, each of which forms one tone in a three and a half octave instrument. The stoneharp is composed of rhyolite stone slabs. This instrument is probably unique in music history. It was used in the composition Odin’s Raven Magic which the Icelandic band Sigur Rós performed along with musicians and singers.

Iceland Post operates one of the country’s largest fleet of vehicles, totaling 110 cars which only handle mail transport. The total driving distance is around 3.5 million km a year, not including the rural post which is responsible for mail transport in rural areas. Iceland Post has adopted environmental policies and monitors carbon emissions by the vehicle fleet. About one-third of all postal cars in the metropolitan area are methane vehicles, and the aim is to increase such environment-friendly vehicles. The combustion of methane instead of gasoline or diesel fuel emits much less carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Eleven years ago Iceland Post started using the first methane gas vehicle. In all automobiles, GPS trackers record information on driving behavior. With them cars can be monitored in real time on a computer.
